Small service businesses struggle to compete in a rapidly changing and
dynamic market in the digital economy era. Therefore, through digital transformation
(DT), small service businesses seek to increase their competitive advantage, improve
business performance, and achieve business growth. However, small service
businesses have limited resources and capabilities, making them deal with several
barriers and challenges. This study aims to discover the drivers, barriers, and
government roles for digital transformation in small service businesses.
This study applied a qualitative approach involving semi-structured in-depth
interviews with top management of small service businesses. First, this study selected
ten cases of small service businesses to form various service industries in Taiwan. Then,
this study employed the deductive analysis method to examine interview data in three
steps and construct a model and framework.
This research reveals six main drivers to digital transformation in small service
businesses: increasing business competition, a chance for new/overseas markets,
customers, the need to collaborate, human capital problems, and demand for
innovation. Furthermore, this study found seven barriers and seven government roles
supporting digital transformation in small service businesses. Additionally, based on
this study’s findings, a model for drivers, applications, barriers, and government
support of digital transformation in small service businesses is presented.
This study contributes to the conceptual framework and management
implications in the digital transformation field. The study’s findings provide insights to
practitioners and suggest that the government could alter the current policies and
programs to support digital transformation in small service businesses.
