Instructional technology evolves from the area of audio-visual education. In the past 50 years, the development and implementation of instructional technology in the educational system in Taiwan has been successful, and can be distinguished as the early burgeoning stage (1953 - 1973 ), the developmental stage (1973 - 1990 ), and the maturing stage (1990 ). Through the three stages, instructional technology develops rapidly not only because of its technological advancement, but also because of its eclectic approach to integrating knowledge from various disciplines. Such an eclectic approach undoubtedly consolidates its professional and academic development. The author contends that the future development of instructional technology in Taiwan will be oriented toward integration, networking, distancing, interacting, digitizing, opening and diverging.
