　　　　　做為當今最醒目同時也最具歷史累積的深刻性的政治體制，自由主義民 主確實有著不凡的成就。從近代自由主義國家轉進到自由主義民主，不僅是在體 現西方近三百餘年來的政冶思想的主潮，亦是在探索個人如何可以有尊嚴地在群 體裡獲得安頓的可能性。 自由主義民主之能吸引人，離不開它所應允的許諾。而這些許諾當中，又不乏對 於不同面向的平等的積極承擔。但歷史的腳步導引了資本主義與自由主義民主的 共棲共生，此一共生關係使資本運動的邏輯滲入並攪動自由主義民主的許諾。除 了解析自由主義民主的孕生過程及其許諾的格式外，本文亦試圖指出，除非以更 誠實的態度面對資本運動的邏輯所必然導致的經濟條件的不平等，否則，自由主 義民主的許諾將大為失色。
　　　　　In view of the historical evolution of political systems, it is obvious thatliberal democracy surpasses all others in its ambitions and liberating effects.As a political system aiming at the protection of human rights and thepromotion of popular sovereignty, liberal democracy flourishes withadmiring cheers and enjoys a high prestige among friends and foes alike. Butto keep its promises and to sustain its glories, there still are problems thatshould not be ignored. Most importantly, due to the mixture of capitalismand liberal democracy, the existence of gross economic inequality endangersthe very root of its promises and glories. This author tries to formulate theinner tension and practical implication of this inequality that has so fardevastated and exploited amity and affinity among those living under it.Some really dread that if more equality in economic conditions is to be putinto practice, we should have no other enjoyment than mere animal pleasureand unwanted strangers will be invited to partake our desert and diminishour freedom. By contrast, this author argues that more equality is needed tomake freedom in liberal democracy real and alive.
