The study aimes to examine if certain grips are able to provide an easier access to a better backhand stroke skill for tennis beginners. The subjects are students who have chosen tennis for their weekly Physical Education classes. Their performance is asessed and record when practicing backhand ground stroke with a serving maching and against the wall. The following are results and conclusions: 1. Practicing against the wall-- (1) Female students with two-hand backhand performs better, and male students with one-hand back hand performs better. (2) For long distance stroke, there is no significant difference between male and female students. For short distance two-hand backhand stroke, female students are better (P<.05). the final Female students with two-hand backhand ground stroke performs better。 2. Practicing with a seavring maching-- (1) For long distance one-hand backhand stroke, male students are better, but with no significant difference. (2) For long distance two-hand backhand stroke, male students are better with significant difference (P<0.5).(3) For short distance stroke, female students are better with no significant difference. 3. Learning effectiveness-- For both male and female students, the final tests show significant difference in their performance: male students one-hand better two-hand in their performance students two-hand better one-hand in their performance。 4. Backhand stroke from different positions-- (1) There is no significant difference between one-hand and two-hand stroke from different positions (F=0.16 for female, F=2.52 for male). (2) Short distance stroke is better than long distance stroke with significant difference (P<.05, F=49.36 for male, F=53.14 for female).
