This study discusses some problems of current geomorphic disaster mitigation methods. Despite their demonstrated failure, many administrators and engineers still adopt policies of direct confrontation with natural processes in dealing with natural hazards or other issues of the natural environment. However, this paper suggests that in the future we will be forced to acknowledge that it is more effective to manage environmental resources by further emphasizing environmental education in order to create a new relationship between humans and their environment. If this objective is not achieved, progress in the mitigation of geomorphic hazards cannot be maintained and sustainable development will remain little more than a fairy tale.
