During the past twenty years, the evolution of the swimming technique has kept going on. The principle of changing depends on whether the swimmer can make the best use of the power generated from the whole body. By now the kicking technique of backstroke will, therefore, change a lot according the principle. It changes from the traditional kicking to upbeat butterfly kicking. The swimmers used the upbeat butterfly kicking only within the starting and turning in the past. The latest technique of back applies the upbeat butterfly kicking to whole course of race so as to improve the forward speed. But whole motion will be affected as the result of the new kicking technique. To perform the new technique well not only needs the proper stroke but also the other elements including the frequency of upbeat butterfly kicking, keeping the body rolling, the amplitude of vibration of upbeat butterfly kicking. And keeping the upper body steady and coordinated. The most important is that the kicking should be in the right time. The purpose of the study is to introduce the function of the new technique which is to make up for the shortcoming of the traditional kicking technique. Besides, we will discuss the elements which are mentioned above. We hope the study can help coach and athletes achieve great performance.
