在西方文學中，巫術、巫士、女巫是有很多面向的。基督教文明征服西方後，巫術開始有世俗之道德批判價值。一般人漸漸將巫術、巫士、女巫與魔鬼信徒劃上等號。在十六、十七世紀，歐洲出現一股獵巫(witch hunting)張潮，造成幾十萬人被處以極刑。本文將探討巫術對西方戲劇的影響。上自希臘悲劇《米蒂亞》(Medea)，下迄現代美國戲劇《熔爐》(The Crucible)，巫術在這劇戲劇中都佔有重要的成份。應該是悲天憫人的宗教和慘絕人寰的獵巫之間究竟是甚麼關連？人們對女巫如何殘酷迫害在劇作家的眼中又有甚麼意有及啟發？本文擬從美國劇作家亞瑟．米勒(Arthur Miller)的《熔爐》作為出發點做個案研，探討現代西方劇劇中巫術、女巫的意義及作用。同時本文將援用米歇．傅科(Michel Foucault)的《瘋狂與文明》(Madness and Civilization)及《規訓與懲罰》(Discipline and Punish)剖析國家或社會機制利用巫術審判達到政治或宗教的目的，而政治或宗教的集體運作有時竟比黑巫術(black magic)更邪惡。
