Han Yu, as the head of the eight famous literates in Chinese Tang and Song dynasties, shows great originality and creativity in his works. In Huo Lin Jie, Han Yu not only renovates traditional Chinese norms but also organizes its structure in a profound and wonderful way through the skillful utilization of sui, ran, sui ran, and ran ze. These four adverbial conjunctions are the structural pivot of the article. They coherently connect the paragraphs and develop the organization. Hence, a study which involves syntax and rhetoric is needed to explore the syntactic features of the adverbial conjunctions. This study, using Han Yu's Huo Lin Jie as the material, aims to settle down the issues of compositional organization and meaning linking. It can be divided into three parts. In the first part, Introduction, the research motivation and research methodology will be summarized. In the second part, Discussion, the researcher tries to illustrate the structural features of Huo Lin Jie from the perspectives of topic, paragraph, organization, and rhetoric. In the final part, Conclusion, the function of sui, ran, sui ran, and ran ze will be revealed, and how they achieve coherence will be also examined. Through this study, the researcher hopes to have more knowledge of the relationship among syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
