This paper focuses on verbal nouns or nouns in Chinese and English during translation from Chinese to Japanese. This paper shows how these nouns are transformed into adjectival verbs or adjectival nouns in Japanese, and how, together with the Japanese light verb suru, these Chinese or English nouns are incorporated into the Japanese language (such as in new phrases to express current technical concepts and notions). This paper likewise contains a genrealized analysis of the relevant syntactic structures and functions. Through comparison of syntactic structures, this paper explores the relevance of the Japanese and Chinese structures and functions. A corpus of simultaneous interpretation from Chinese to Japanese and English to Japanese is used to explore the syntactic meaning and function of light verbs in the translation process.
