Over the past four hundred years since Feng Hao expressed his suspect that Lee Shangyi had unspeakable love affairs with Taosist priestesses in Mount Yuyang in his commentary to Li’s poem, “The Poem of Yuntai,” in the early Ching dynasty, few have not been affected by his remarks. However, no one can be certain if Li actually had an affair or not. The primary purpose of this paper is to find out if these affairs are history or mere speculations. Meanwhile, Feng Hao specifically pointed out that plenty of allusions of :”fairy maidens” in this poem implied that it was written for Taoist priestess. Through an analysis of these allusions, I intend to answer the following questions in this paper. First, what was Li Shangyin’s attitude towards Daoism and how did he contact with his Daoist friends ? second, what was the actual relationship between Li Shanyin and some Tasoist priestesses? Was there any concrete evidence such as the possible time and places in which they met? Third, Feng Hao held that plenty of references to “fairy maidens” in the “Yentai” poem indicate that it was written for Taoist priestesses. Is that really what the text was about? Fourth, what does “Yentai” allegorize or symbolize?
