Literary bibliography is one of the fundamentals of literary research rather than literary research itself. It may seem erudite and profound to substitute the latter with the former. Nevertheless, such a substitution is actually due to the misplacement of the subject matter. Biographical information about Zhang Xie is so rare that evidential research almost becomes unfeasible. This fact is not a weakness for research; it is rather a forte – researchers are allowed to focus on Zhang Xie’s works themselves, to find out how readers of the Six Dynasties found uniqueness in and extol the ten poems of his masterpiece “Zashi” (Miscellaneous Poems), which rivals Pan Yue’s and Lu Ji’s works in the world of ancient style poems.
