The purposes of this study were to develop a mathematics achievement test for seventh graders in Tainan based on the Grade 1-9 Curriculum, and to explore the differences in performance due to gender, tutoring, school size, school type (public vs private), and textbook version. The population of the study consisted of all the eighth graders in Tainan City. Three samples were drawn: the first pilot sample (n=402), the second pilot sample (n=455), and the norming sample (n=870). The Mathematics Achievement Test for Seventh Graders was developed by the author. The data were analyzed in two dimensions: 1. CTT and IRT analysis, and 2. statistical tests on the differences in performance for the variables of gender, tutoring, school size, school type, and textbook version. Finally, based on the results and findings of this study, suggestions for the practical use of the test and future research were provided.
