爵士樂,可說是二十世紀在美國產生的音樂,而爵士樂興起至今已有百年歷史了。近年來爵士樂消費人口逐漸復甦,加上如村上春樹等作家在其著作上引述的推波助瀾,以爵士樂為主題之唱片及商品化有逐年增加之趨勢。本研究以當時爵士樂領導品牌之一“Blue Note(藍調之音)”唱片公司專屬的設計指導Reid Miles,在他與Blue Note合作期間之視覺表現,作為音樂產品包裝設計與以爵士音樂爲主題之流行商品設計之參考。 Reid Miles係美國20世紀新生代設計師,以文字圖像化及大膽前衛的字體與版面編排名列經典設計師之列。1999年日本IDEA雜誌(1999, Vol.47, No.274)所出版20世紀代表設計風格回顧特輯中,將Reid Miles列舉爲字體與版面設計(Typography)經典代表。Reid Miles於50-60年代間與Blue Note唱片公司長達十多年的合作,設計了約五百張唱片封套,建立起Blue Note唱片公司獨樹一格之視覺表徵,在眾多爵士樂品牌中脫穎而出。本研究匯整Reid Miles之設計作品,解析當代時代背景與設計風格演變,期待進一步了解Reid Miles如何進行設計探索,最終形成自己的設計風格,並將研究結果提供對設計有興趣者參考。
Jazz music has lived for a hundred years since the 20th century when it was born in U.S. and thrived. In addition to the coming back of more consumers on Jazz music, Jazz-themed records and merchandise have been increasing each year boosted by citations in works by writers such as Muraue Haruki. This research used the visual expressions of Reid Miles during his collaboration with, as Design Director exclusively of, ”Blue Note Records”, one of the then leading labels as reference for the packaging design on musical products and the design on popular products with a theme of Jazz. A representative designer in U.S. in mid 20th century, Reid Miles was among the iconic designers for his practice of graphic texts and bold, avant-garde characters and layouts. He was listed as the classic figure for text type and typography by a Japanese magazine, IDEA, in 1999, in its special retrospective edition of representative design styles of 20th century (1999, Vol.47, No.274). Miles designed about 500 album covers during his employment by Blue Note Records over a decade amid 50's and 60's and established a one-of-a-kind visual symbol for this company, which had stood out among the various Jazz labels. This research made of summary of design works by Reid Miles, analyzing the time background and transition in design styles of his contemporary era, in hope to further understand how he made exploration in designing and finally formed his own design style. The research results were also presented as reference to those interested in designing.
