Abstract There are many words relating to “sleeve” in Chinese. This paper explicates, from the perspective of etymological relationship, how these words got their original meaning. It is argued that word like 「」 was used to designate the “armpit” part of a sleeve because the graph 「夜」shared the sound and meaning of “armpit” . By the same token, the words「袔」「袪」「袂」「褎」「」 were derived from the root words which had the meaning of “a divergent branch”, “departure”, “an opening”, “to hang down”, “to bend, to curve” respectively. It also argues that the same methodology could be applied to the identification of indigenous words. For instance, although 「」was documented only in Eastern Yantze area, judging from the etymological connection it bears, the word must be indigenous to Old Chinese.
