法國藝術家葛杭維以政治漫畫和文學繪本揚名於七月王朝，在他短暫悲劇的生涯，開創了大量的驚異圖像，引起褒貶不一的回應和多元的詮釋。本文以葛杭維的代表作《另一世界》(1843~1844) 為焦點，探討奇幻變形和諷刺漫畫的藝術語言，如何映照浪漫主義自然史觀和社會文化。首先勾勒旅遊故事的梗概和木口版畫的風格，鋪陳當時遊記出版和「動物人狂熱」風潮，闡釋這部繪本的生成背景。此書喜感怪誕的混種圖像表現出擬人化動力，違抗了實證的知識論和分類法，衍生人類和萬物之間的邊界認同。本文亦檢視這部繪本和傅立葉社會主義的關聯，以及其中對於文化商品化和機械化的隱憂。《另一世界》以「批判的非寫實主義」之姿，具體而微地應答社會主義的挫敗和資本主義的茁壯。
