This article describes the perioperative nursing care provided to a young male patient who received total gastrectomy for gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) with liver metastasis. The data were collected from March 25 to April 9, 2010. Based on Gordon 11 functional health patterns, we practiced the perioperative nursing care model. The author found four health problems: anxiety, potential injury, and knowledge deficit. To help reduce anxiety in the patient, we provided continuous attention, listening and surgery-related information. During the operation, we followed the standard operation procedure to keep the patient in a safe and aseptic environment so as to avoid anypotential injury. After the operation, we constantly visited the patient, and taught him how to apply patient controlled analgesia (PCA) and massage correctly and effectively to relieve the pain. Finally, the patient and his family were educated self-care before discharge. Through sharing the experience of perioperative nursing care, we hope that the patients will get more assistance in treatment courses.
