The purpose of this study was to compare the technical modes and landing areas of stroke for Zhang Ning between the scoring points and losing points. The study adopted notational analysis to examine video clips of 10 matches of Zhang Ning from 2006 to 2008 (a total of 20 games). The data collected underwent statistical analysis including test of homogeneity proportions and chi-square test, with the results described as follows : distribution of number of strokes per point for winning and losing games did not reach significant level. Regardless of a winning or losing game, the 5-12 strokes per point had the highest percentage (48.5%, 53.4%), followed by 0-4 (25.8%, 25.1%), 13-20 (18.6%, 16.1%), and 21 strokes and above (7.1%, 5.4%). There were significant differences in the stroke types for point scored and lost after (including) the third shot. Generally speaking, the High Clear (23.0%) was used the most, followed by Lob (18.5%), block (16.9%) and Drop Shot (14.6%). There were 152 Smashes (12.4% of the 1230 total strokes used) for the scoring points and it was significantly higher than the 102 smashes used in the losing points (7.8% of the 1312 total strokes used). For the distribution of the shuttlecock landing locations after (including) the third shot, the highest percentage was at the middle right backcourt (22.6%) and the middle left backcourt (22.3%) followed by the right forecourt (16.8%) and the left forecourt (13.9%). In conclusion Zhang Ning tactically took the action of Drive and Drop at the four corners to move the opponents and technically adopted mostly the defensive strokes such as High Clear, Lob and block. Smash had a quite important role in the structure of Zhang Ning’s strategic organization of a game and was an important technique affecting the result of a point even it was not the most used technique in her games.
