如何站在中國人自身的立場，探究近代中國革命的歷史，一直是西方學者的主要關懷。事實上，自1950年代西方的共產中國研究開展以來，學者就未曾忽略來自中國內部的歷史動力。1980年代以後，「在中國發現歷史」，已成為西方共產中國研究圈內的主流趨勢。此一趨勢的源起與特色是什麼？其迄今為止的發展概況又是如何？本文將藉由梳理半世紀以來與毛澤東時代中共農村革命史研究相關的英語文獻，試圖回答上述問題。

Many Western scholars have been concerned with discovering the revolutionary history of modern China according to the standpoints of Chinese themselves. In fact, since the establishment of the field of Communist China studies in the 1950s, scholars have never neglected the historical dynamics from within China. Since the 1980s, ”discovering history in China” has become mainstream in the field of Communist China studies. What are its origins, characteristics, and evolution? To answer these questions, this article examines the English-language literature of the past fifty years on the history of rural revolution in Mao's China.
