Using an appropriate management can make forest to develop it’s fully function. The forest is not only a kind of natural resources with economic value but also the environment we live. With changing times, the role of forests is becoming complex. The forest basic function can be divided into, timber production, territory security, water conservation, wildlife habitat, protect the ecosystem, forest recreation, absorbing and storing carbon. The different type and purposes of forest have different management method. Forest in Taiwan from early years the timber production was primary goal, now the management goal become ecosystems management. The purpose of this study is to discuss the people’s cognition of each forest functions and recognition for forest management in different background. By taking an example from college students and graduate students. The research collection data is based on questionnaire survey by using SPSS statistics. The questionnaire divided into, basic data, did you agree these functions of forest, and did you agree this management of forest, three parts. From the results, the most important is water conservation, protect the ecosystem, and purify the air, the second important is territory security and absorb the CO2, the most not important is timber production, travel and recreation and production by-product. For different types of groups the forest knowledge background is not same, the higher education level more acceptable to the appropriate timber harvesting, overall people can accept appropriate forest management.
