王國維的詩學觀念打破了中國傳統的「天人合一」思想，認為詩歌的本質是表現真理。這種真理不是社會真理，而是形而上的真理。中國新詩在發展過程中拋棄了傳統詩歌意境，其主流哲學趨向正是西方哲學意義上的形而上精神，這一趨向正是王國維所宣導的。王國維的詩學思想雖然在新詩誕生前就產生了，但它表達的是現代精神，應屬於廣義的新詩。新詩的哲學精神雖然從黃遵憲、魯迅等就開始探討了，但王國維對這一精神的探討最早、思考最成熟。由於王國維詩學觀念的尖銳性和純粹形而上品質，至今少有人注意，但他事實上已成為中國新詩形而上寫作的精神旗幟。
