哈葛德 (Henry Rider Haggard, 1856-1925) 是十九世紀末英國通俗小說暢銷作家，也是清末民初最受歡迎的外國小說家之一。清末民初期間漢譯哈葛德小說多達將近四十種，其中林紓就翻譯了25 種之多。哈葛德小說 She: A Historyof Adventure 共有兩種晚清譯本：《長生術》與《三千年豔屍記》。《長生術》由曾廣銓翻譯，1898 年連載在《時務報》和《昌言報》。《三千年豔屍記》由林紓與曾宗鞏合譯，非連載小說，1910 年由上海商務印書館直接以單行本問世，共上、下兩卷。本文分三部分比較《長生術》與《三千年豔屍記》。 She 的讀者一定會注意到作者刻意創造出醜男Horace Holly 和其美男養子Leo Vincey 所產生外貌上的反差效果。長生不老 Ayesha 的美豔形象也深深地烙入She 的讀者心中。第一部分將分析以上三位重要人物的形象如何分別在《長生術》與《三千年豔屍記》被呈現。此外，故事中關於非洲珍禽異獸，特殊的自然景觀描寫更為人所津津樂道。第二部分將比較《長生術》與《三千年豔屍記》中關於非洲動植物與非洲特有地形的描寫。第三部分討論 She 一書絕非譯者任意挑選之結果。兩譯本的譯者們皆利用翻譯救國，傳達西學，林紓與曾廣銓所關注的西學並非She 中所介紹現代西方發明的器物，而是 She 中 Holly 和 Leo 代表西方線性史觀勝過 Ayesha 代表傳統循環史觀的道理。
Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was one of the most popular Western novelists in late Qing and early Republican China. More than thirty of his works were translated in that period, largely thanks to Lin Shu 林紓 who translated twenty-five of them. This paper examines two renditions of Haggard’s fiction, She: A History of Adventure (1887). Zeng Guangquan 曾廣銓 translated She under the Chinese title Changsheng shu 《長生術》 serialized in the newspaper Shiwu bao 《時務報》in 1898. Wit the help of Zeng Zonggong 曾宗鞏, Lin Shu translated it under the Chinese title Sanqian nian yanshi ji 《三千年豔屍記》published in book form in 1910. This paper compares the above late Qing renditions of She focusing on their depictions of three main characters including Horace Holly, Leo Vincey, and Ayesha-She-who-must-be-obeyed and their descriptions of African wild life and landscapes. I discuss how and why the translators re/presented these characters differently in their translations. I also discuss how they manipulated the source text and put it in the late Qing context. Moreover, I argue that the selection of She was never a random pick by the translators. They introduced the linear perspective on history and time represented by Holly and Leo in She to late Qing readers who were familiar with cyclical perspective on history and time and tried to convince them that this new idea would prevail.
