In 1949, Hu Lien reorganized the 12^(th) Corps of National Army in Jiangxi, leading the exiled students of the Raging Tide Military and Political Academy as well as one hundred thousand troops to break through the People's Liberation Army. The corps passed western Fujian and eastern Guangdong, continued along the Han River, and finally reached the sea from Shantou to Taiwan. Hu's corps further supported the military operations of Dinghai and Kinmen to stabilize the war situation, and therefore became the main defensive force in Kinmen that eventually broke the dream of the People's Republic of China for liberating Taiwan. Hu Lien Corps was organized hastily. But, how the corps could have reached Taiwan and still been able to keep its complete form? The answer was that there were other forces and guerrillas helping block off the People's Liberation Army, which means that these forces and guerrillas were destined to be sacrificed in combats. Only if the story of the sacrificed forces of National Army is faithfully presented, one can fully understand the entire experience of Hu Lien Corps departing Mainland China. All the warriors who had never been able to reach Taiwan ought to be remembered and praised by Taiwanese people.
