澳洲、印尼、東帝汶是鄰近的國家，三者卻是西方國家與東方國家的差異，在澳洲的地緣戰略之下，三方的互動牽涉到彼此的利益。澳洲、印尼、東帝汶在區域安全、經濟開發等等都有共同且相互影響、互爲因果的利益關係，這些關係透過近代歷史的角度可歸納爲東帝汶獨立運動、亞太區域安全、難民問題、油田開發等議題來了解澳洲對印尼與東帝汶的政策。

While Australia, Indonesia and East Timor are geographically close to each other, they are actually very different, to the point that they are cast as ＂Western＂ versus ＂Non-Western＂ countries. Still, in consideration of Australia's geo-strategy, interactions among the three countries have significant implications on each other's interests. Australia, Indonesia and East Timor have common, mutual and reciprocal interests in issues such as regional security and economic development, as cases in modern history--East Timor Independence Movement, Asia-Pacific regional security, asylum seeker issue, oil field development, and etc--have shown. And these cases provide insights into Australia's policy towards Indonesia and East Timor.
