Standards for public libraries have been developed by ALA over the past 50 years, in 1933, 1943, 1956, and 1966. Each set of standards reflected fresh concepts of services and organization. They provided up-to-date guides for evaluating public library services. This article discusses the American experiences in developing public library standards, and their applications and influence as well. Some comparisons are made between these four standards. Hopefully that it will bring some suggestions to our own development of library standards.
