　　　　　在現代化的過程中，主要社會團體被動員到政治舞台上。由於政治制度化的不足，無法將這些需求納入體系中。政治團體無法彙集整合各方利益，民意因此無法有效地轉化為政策，普遍的社會挫折感便產生了。由於政治系統缺乏管道，使得各類社會團體必須以自力救濟、各類型的集體抗爭和暴力行為來從事政治參與。對集體政治行為的研究不但成為維持政治安定所必需，也成為政策制定的主要課題。為了瞭解集體政治暴力行動的產生因素，許多參與的理論嘗試從跨國和實証的研究中建立。理性抉擇理論基於成本和代價的考量，來說明暴力的產生的基本條件。基於這個假設，筆者以宏觀的角度，從系統和結構性因素來探討暴力的產生。在文中除了為主要變數作定義與測量外，並對民主化程度、政府鎮壓程度和潛在分離意識三方面與政治暴力的關係分別作檢討和實証的研究。並在最後以複迴歸分析作一個整合以收控制之效，以檢查整體模式的可信性。由於假設的証實須經重覆的測試才能得知其強健的解釋力，本文將以六個五年區隔對主要假設作連續測試，試圖以跨國分析來檢測主要假設。就整體而言，理性抉擇理論廣泛地被証實。
