Since medium-and small-sized medical libraries can only collect a small number of specialized materials for use by their readers, due to personnel, budgetary and space limitations, and the number of medical periodicals has mushroomed to an alarming extent in recent years, how to choose and acquire authoritative and useful materials is of great concern to medical librarians and users. An authoritative list of core materials selected by experts to consult when choosing such materials would increase everyone's confidence in making such choices. This study addresses the aforementioned need by compiling an appropriate list of 236 core medical science periodicals under 42 topics for use by domestic users that can serve as a basis for medical libraries of all levels to establish a basic periodical collection that can provide reference materials for medical personnel engaged in teaching, research or treatment of patients.
