　　　　　線上公用目錄自1970年代正式發展以來，以所運用的技術特徵約可區分 為三代。每一代目錄之間都強調介面的改進，而易於使用及立即學習性則是未 來的發展重點。本文由各代線上公用目錄所運用的檢索技術切入，兼論它所採 行的架構及所引發的檢索困擾，也嘗試引介新的技術層面，並反思目前眾多的 網路服務站對線上公用目錄所可能帶來的衝擊，至於未來的線上公用目錄應有 什麼樣的面貌、館員能否扮演引領不斷精進的角色則有待全體共同努力。
　　　　　Ever since OPAC was formally developed in the 1970s, the characteristics of its appliedtechnology have been shown in three generations. In each generation, emphasis has been laidon the improvement of the interfaces of catalogs while the easy approach and promptlearning will be the highlights of its future development. This paper aims to introduce the OPAC technology applied in each generation, evaluatethe available structures and the aroused retrieval difficulties, try to suggest new technologies,and ponder over the possible impacts on OPAC brought about by various library networksstations. As to the future outlook of OPAC and the ability of librarians to make better andmore advanced service, joint efforts have to be made by library people in Taiwan Area.
