The appearance and flourishing of capitalism in the middle of the Ming dynasty caused an increased availability and circulation of books as bookstores prospered. The back covers of books, like those of modern times, contained descriptions designed to persuade readers to buy. Although much research has been done regarding other prices at that time, little has been done regarding the price of books. Yet the sale of books had an effect on the economy of the Ming dynasty. This essay discusses the impact of book selling on the Ming economy.
