連橫因抱憾臺灣無史，故耗費十年心力，旁徵博引，採舊有史書體例，增革損益，以成《臺灣通史》一書。其中在「列傳」撰寫上，連橫能在日人高壓統治下，宏揚漢族中心主義與儒家道統倫常，實屬不易。而在體例上：能發揮史家道德批判精神，控訴不義之人；摒棄英雄史觀，注意平民歷史；實地調查，詳用史料考證真偽，也應受推崇。雖然如此，因連橫缺乏史家訓練兼不識西文，故在傅主選樣上失去客觀：非漢人，則多持負面議論甚或不予列載。在分類上：雖以編年排列，但分佈多顯雜亂，且各合傳傳主數有明顯差異。在寫作內容及取向上；未注意傳主作品、相關文件及他人評論。另在資料引用上亦多有錯誤，但最嚴重者乃改造事實，以強化漢族中心主義觀點，該書雖有缺失，惟成書年代較早，且以一人之力著述立說，同時兼顧列傳寫作態度、方法與取向、在現今未出現類同正史格式之通史著作下，我們仍應肯定該書在臺灣研究之貢獻。

In that book, biographies is one of important parts, Lian Heng exalts the critical spirits to accuse of some immoral persons by moral indicator and excludes the great man points instead of ordinary people. Besides, the author uses the material of history to textual research facts. 　　However, Lian Heng still has some weak points in that book. The first, be dislikes the foreigner but Han people, so gives the bad describe about that people. Furthermore, when he making use of chronological style but appearing disorderly and confused in the book. The last. Lian Heng makes some mistakes to quote from data. But the worst thing is trumping up facts in order to strengthen a point of Hanism views. 　　To sum up, "The General History" has some weak points but serious attitude and good study approach, so we should affirm the contribution of thas book for Taiwan study.
