While studying Shih Ching (the Book of Poetry), one has to, first of all, possess a good knowledge of its artistic devices; and chung chang hu tsu (the use of mutually supplementary chapters in basically the same of form with only slight variations) is one of its poetic crafts. Former scholar, who either neglected this skill, or only gave some uncertain comments, or even failed to understand its function, had to grapple with the meanings of the verses in Shih Ching yet often with little success. This paper, applying both theory and evidences, means to explicate this artistic method. Its six chapter are: (1) Preface, (2) Some comments on Hu Wen (corresponding words in the couplets) and Hu Tsu, (3) Chung Chang Fu Ta and Its Way of Revealing the Meanings of the Verses, (4) Some Comments on Ku Chieh Kang's Averment that Chung Chang Fu Ta Was Effected by Ancient Musicians, (5) the Types and Contents of Chung Chang Hu Tsu, and (6) Conclusion. The writer of this paper sincerely hopes that it may prove to be some help to the Shih Ching scholars.
