This article briefly reviews the agricultural communication and media used by the Agricultural Extension Work in the past 50 years in Taiwan. The agricultural communication work in Taiwan began in 1949 when the Joint Commissions of the Rural Reconstruction (JCRR) was moved to Taiwan from Mainland China with the Chinese Government. It was managed by the Office of Information and Education of the JCRR, then switched to the Farmer's Service Section in 1963. Most of the agricultural communication work was executed by the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, Taiwan Provincial Government. In the early stage, the efforts concentrated on producing printed media (leaflets, pamphlets, handbook etc.), agricultural journals, posters, charts and flannel board materials, slides, 16mm films, agricultural radio programs, agricultural TV programs, and video tapes. The development of the agricultural information system began in the late 1980s. With the technological advancement of internet and WWW, the development of Agricultural Web stations and the newly constructed Agricultural Extension Web system is also discussed. This article concludes with a discussion of the problems of agricultural communication and its future prospects.
