通過將思想史和政治史相結合,本文論述了漢帝國時期的兩個悖論。漢儒完善了天人感應的災異說,從理論上來看,這種學說能夠讓官員利用災異來限制皇權。但從災異說現實的運用上看,我們發現其完全背離漢儒的理論設計,淪落為政治權力的附庸。當我們進一步追問是什么導致災異說理論和實際運用的巨大偏差時,我們發現了第二個有趣的悖論。儒生成功地取代了卜、史等專職官員成為災異的主要解讀者,但他們成功的原因也直接導致他們喪失了卜、史曾經擁有的對災異解說的話語壟斷。在災異解釋缺乏制度化、職業化的保證時,災異理論不具有獨立自主性,不僅災異解讀陷于無休止的論爭中,而且往往為政治權力所綁架,成為一個服務于當權者的斗爭工具。
