In the period after the May Fourth Movement,Liang Shuming raised a question to which many paid close attention:against the background of Western culture having become world culture, how could the increasingly marginalized Chinese culture emancipate itself? His proposal was to completely accept Western culture and revise it to some extent, then use a critical attitude to produce Chinese culture anew. Embarrassingly, however,he found that the culture that wanted to free itself could not express itself; it was silent. Meanwhile, the practice of cultural emancipation also faced a tension between"Chinese culture"and the real"China. "Before and after the Northern Expedition,Liang Shuming went to the countryside; perhaps the natural development of the path of emancipation runs from void to solid. Liang then proposed a slogan of "going eastward,"seeming to abandon the road of Westernization. However, overall,Liang Shuming’s thinking was more like a universal discourse in a transitional period combining the world and China. In other words,it was a country not only being loyal to itself, but also taking on responsibilities for the world and,in the process rebuilding a cultural center that could express itself.
