In order to investigate the technology and pigments employed for painting the murals in a Yuan Dynasty tomb discovered in Luoqitai, Shannxi Province, 13 samples were studied via polarization microscope observation, Raman spectral analysis, thin section examination, and petrographic examination. According to the results, the painting procedure of the murals was as follows. First, the surface was smoothed by adding clay mixed with plant fiber. Then a layer of lime was applied, and on the top was the color layer with pigments. Results show that the blue pigment was made of azurite; the red pigment was made of iron oxide and cinnabar; the yellow pigment was made of yellow iron oxide material; the green pigment was made of copper chloride and malachite; the white pigment was made of calcium carbonate and the black was of black carbon.
