The author offers a new interpretation for an important character in inscriptions of the Zhongzhafu pan basin. Through palaeographic analysis, the author suggests the character that used to be considered composing of 辶, 舟, and 禾 should be transcribed differently. This character should only consists of 辶 and ■, in which the part ■ is the phonetic component. For this reason, this character should be read as shu(菽), and the related character should compose the compound shumai(菽麥)together, which can be identifi ed in other transmitted texts. As one of the fi ve major crops, the identifi cation of shu(菽) shed new light on the history of agriculture.
