This paper elucidates a hypothesis on employment, a predominant but unresolved problem of urbanization. On the basis of reviewing the historical performance of pluriactivity and mobility in China’s urbanization process, the paper argues that, considering the situation of current urbanization, it is impossible to duplicate the urbanization employment mode implied by the classic urbanization theory characterized by "de-pluriactivity" and "de-mobility." Rather, pluriactivity and mobility should be the key character in forming a feasible and sustainable alternative for the employment in urbanization. Further, the paper hypothesizes a fl exible urbanization mode integrating pluriactivity and mobility which is different from the inflexibility cognition of the current urbanization theory.
