After briefly reviewing the research on Japanese otaku and comparing it to fandom in English literatures,this paper reviews and analyzes the history and current research of otaku and erciyuan culture in China from three research frames.It depicts the landscape of how academics deal with this subculture in Englishspeaking countries,Japan and China.The author finds that from 2016,there appears to have been a conceptual reconstruction from otaku to erciyuan in Chinese academia.The author then analyzes the process of and the reasons for the local discourse practice,revealing the isomorphic process of political-economic powers and knowledge.The study also reveals the insufficiency of the academic reaction to the practice.
