The media characteristics of network include the two communication channels of Rogers’s Diffusion of Innovation Theory, mass communication and interpersonal communication. The characteristics of distributed knowledge of web-based learning communities enable participants to not only be knowledge providers but also be knowledge receivers, and the concept and skill of innovation can be spread within this interactive and flexible community. Since Web-based learning communities will become one of the main learning methods in the future, the factors that influence diffusion of innovation have become important issues.
The aim of this study is to analyze the social networks in Web-based learning communities and to construct a diffusion of innovation model for web-based learning communities. The process can be divided into two stages. In the first stage, which was based on social network analysis, UNINET was used as a tool to analyze the teachers in Web-based learning communities to understand the construction of the relationship between communities and the key motivators. The methods included social network analysis, focus group interviews and the objects were the teachers who participated in online distance education programs sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The aim of this stage was to construct a diffusion of innovation model for Web-based learning communities. The second stage focused on the implementation of the model. The questionnaires were sent to elementary school and junior high school teachers. A total of 360 surveys were sent out and 285 valid surveys were returned. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the diffusion of innovation model for web-based learning communities in order to strengthen the improvement and promotion of the diffusion of innovation. The conclusions from this study are as follows:
1.The second-order factors such as performance perception, learning motivation, situation perception, and mobile characteristics have positive effects on the improvement of diffusion of innovation for web-based learning communities.
2.The degree of fitness of the whole constructed model is very good, and the four potential second-order factors have high explanatory power of teaching innovation.
3.The external variables which influence diffusion of innovation for web-based learning communities are perceived usefulness, compatibility, self-efficacy, perceived enjoyment, atmosphere of trust, interaction, e-tutor, system quality, and the personal traits of acceptance of diffusion of innovation and key mobility. However, perceived usefulness, external motivation and social recognition have insignificant influence.
4.Performance perception and mobile characteristics directly influence the improvement of teaching innovation ability for web-based learning communities, while situation perception and learning motivation have indirect influence through performance perception.
5.Situation perception has the most influence on learning motivation and performance perception. Of the three first-order factors, the interactivity of the platform has the greatest importance. System quality and e-tutoring have less influence due to the group difference of participants.
6.Perceived enjoyment and atmosphere of trust of internal motivation are more effective for the learning motivation for diffusion of innovation for web-based learning communities than external motivation and social recognition.
7.The personal traits of acceptance of diffusion of innovation and key mobility have high explanatory power of diffusion of innovation for web-based learning communities.
8.The diffusion of innovation model for Web-based learning community can provide a useful reference to the related departments in promoting diffusion of innovation.
