The purpose of the study was divided into two stages. Stage one was aimed to examine the relationship among stressful work-events and stressful academic-events with depressive symptoms and anxiety. Stage two was aimed to investigate the moderating role of gratitude, forgiveness and purpose in life on the association among stressful work-events and stressful academic-events’ prediction on depressive symptoms and anxiety.
Participants were Indonesian international students from eleven universities in Taiwan that join the industrial-academia program: five universities in Tainan city, three universities in Kaohsiung city, one university in Nantou city, one university in Hsinchu city, and one university in Taoyuan city. Data was collected via in-person (university in Tainan city) and via online (university outside Tainan city). The total of participant is 433 respondents (236 via in-person; 197 via online), 24 deleted data, 409 valid data where 76 % male and 24 % female.
The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 software to figure out descriptive statistics, internal consistency, simple regression, and hierarchical regression analyses. Result from the study provided evidence about statistically significant positive relationship between stressful work-events and stressful academic-events with depression symptoms. The study also provided evidence about statistically significant positive relationship between stressful work-events and stressful academic-events with anxiety.
In addition, this study gratitude, forgiveness, and purpose in life did buffer the effects of stressful work-events and stressful academic-events on depressive symptoms and anxiety. These results in student employment population are consistent with the existing literature on stressful life events in other population. This study contributed for coping mechanism with positive psychology namely gratitude, forgiveness, and purpose in life during student employment. The results and limitations are discussed along with suggestions for future research. Implications are presented for college counselors and counselor educators.
