Intimate Partner Violence is a tragic phenomenon that affects as many as a third of women at some point during their lives with often devastating consequences. Immigrant women are at particular risk of victimization and face specific challenges during the help-seeking process. This qualitative study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with professionals and victimized women in Japan, the United States, Portugal, and Germany, using the framework of intersectional feminism to analyze and understand the IPV experience of immigrant women, in their diversity, as multifaceted subjects.
Millions of Brazilians live outside their country of origin, and sadly, IPV is a type of violence that affects many Brazilian women. As such, this research investigated which factors contribute to the victimization process of intimate partner violence against Brazilian victims abroad; what circumstances influence Brazilian women abroad in their decisions to stay or leave an abusive relationship when they are faced with this violence; which support networks Brazilian victims of IPV abroad turn to for help; what difficulties they face in receiving help from informal networks and social and legal services; what are the similarities and differences observed in the IPV experiences of Brazilian victims in the countries surveyed, and, in particular, the institutional and structural barriers faced by these women.
