Traditional architectural mural painting is a kind of delicate decoration applied to structures such as houses or temples. Its laying skills are extremely difficult, and the murals have a huge capacity. Involved in politics, religion, history, culture, economy, folklore and social lifestyles and other rich and colorful fields, including Buddhist scriptures, Taoism, mythology iegends, historical stories, life scenes, landscapes, feathers and flowers, pattern decorations, etc.
Taiwan's traditional architectural murals are deeply influenced by Chinese painting and calligraphy techniques. The composition and coloring are very gorgeous, demonstrating both the simplicity, honesty and integrity of the folks and a high level of artistic value. The painter's skillful brushes not only enrich the colors and the overall beauty of traditional buildings but also incorporate spiritual significance.
In the past, intellectuals and artists were biased in their perceptions of traditional folk arts, using "innovation and change" or "painting in accordance with their dynasty" as the criteria for art evaluation, resulting in a misunderstanding of traditional folk paintings as lacking of contemporary, individual and artistic quality as well as being suppressed.
This dissertation attempts to use the perspective of art history to explain the origin, category, development, and the significance of the existence of traditional architectural murals, taking Pan Lishui, a well-known painter in Fucheng, as the research target for discussing its historical positioning and artistic characteristics, identifying its source system, and reconstructing his life history; hopefully the author is able to present and explore the meaning and functions of traditional temple paintings reflected in people in Taiwan through the perspectives of interaction with different historic periods so as to demonstrate the significance of Taiwanese traditional architectural murals in space symbiosis and its connection with the social and cultural era , The purpose of this dissertation is to alleviate the above-mentioned challengesb modern﹣painters may face at this stage, arouse possible development vitality, and construct the value and aesthetic system of Taiwan's traditional mural art. In doing so, this precious type of art can be handed down from generation to generation.
