With the popularity of western clothing, traditional clothing declined. In recent years, clothing has brought huge pollution to the environment. Taking into account the importance of the sustainable heritage of traditional clothing and the urgency of the current issue on sustainable clothing, and based on the people-oriented design theory, this study explored students’ views on the cultural innovation of clothing and the application of the traditional indigo dyeing technology combining cultural characteristics, colors, and sustainable design of clothing. In particular, this study aimed to understand the cultural innovation of clothing, promote and incorporate principles of environmental protection to expand the market, enhance the value of the industry, and steer clothing towards a sustainable operation. Further, factor analysis, one-way ANOVA (“analysis of variance”), and structural equation model were used in this study to test and analyze the results from 384 college and graduate students.
The findings showed that (1) participants agreed that clothing could attract young potential consumers through innovative design; (2) that the process of traditional indigo dyeing contributes to environmental protection due to its natural sustainability and rich color-matching characteristics; and (3) in terms of clothing sustainability design, participants agreed with the need for sustainability of clothing products and expressed support for reducing the number of discarded clothing. The whole design process is centered on people. Participants agreed that the goal of sustainable clothing could be achieved by incorporating innovative design into traditional clothing and through continuous attention and practice for environmental sustainability. Therefore, the theory of people-oriented design is effective in the field of clothing. It is suggested that the sustainable development of clothing can only be promoted by pursuing continuous innovation in the cultural characteristics of clothing, searching for sustainable product design, enhancing user satisfaction, and participating in responsible consumption.
Moreover, the relevant research results including lines, accessories, and colors, verify the contribution of the people-oriented design theory model to sustainable innovation and sustainable design of clothing. It is also of great significance to the relevant industry, garment designers’ product development, and consumers’ practice of sustainable consumption.
