In order to clarify development status, and research issues in sustainable design, this study conducted a card sorting on CEPS Journal articles, as well as expert interviews with design course instructors. Four research issues and three stages of sustainable design were obtained, and an analysis was performed to evaluate the significant association between these two factors. Therefore, the three conclusions were drawn as follows: 1. The literature publications of sustainable design research could be divided into three stages: initial (1996- 2006), development (2007-2011), and maturity (2012-2019). The peak of articles publication landed on stage 2 due to the encouragement of design methodology from sustainable development. 2. The sustainable design research issues consisted of four categories: sustainable production design, sustainable urban planning and landscape design, sustainable management and business model, and sustainable development and policy. 3. A significant association existed between research issues and stages, implying the peak of articles publication in sustainable urban planning and landscape design in stage 2 was more than those in stage 1 and 3.
