Since literary works are unique to human kind, they manifest thinking and feeling of their authors. Author is motivated by “things”, which can be categorized into denotation and connotation, to compose literary works. In Wei-Jin Two Dynasties, there were great many denotative expressions could be found in literary works composed during that period of time. This category of literary expression had been studied in some literary theories, and the most important work focusing on this “Wen-Hsin-Duao-Lon Chapter Things” written by Liu-Hsieh; therefore, this thesis is focused on the “Wen-Hsin-Duao-Lon Chapter Things” for researching the process which the author, Liu-Hsieh, had gone through to create such a great literary work. In this thesis, there are three parts: first of all, the research is focused on the reason why the authors wanted to express their thinking and feeling by the things surrounding their readers. Secondly, the ways to achieve the goal mentioned-above in the first section and discussed; furthermore, the reason and process for interaction between “things” and thinking are also discussed. At last, the result of that interaction, i.e. the literary work itself, is discussed in the last part. Hoping that this thesis can figure our the whole process and inspiration for an author to create a literary work.
