According to the Guodian texts and analysis of the Zhongyong, today’s Zhongyong text can be divided into two parts: Chapter 2 to the first half of chapter 20 form the original Zhongyong, traditionally attributed to Zisi, while chapter 1 and the second half of chapter 20 to the end of the received text probably belong to a second work of Zisi's, which can be called "Chengming." The two parts exhibit differences in style and thought; the probably had a greater influence on Mencius, and the Zhongyong a greater influence on Xunzi. The two halves were most likely combined to form a single text only long after they were composed.
