Chinese unusual classifiers can be found sporadically throughout the Chinese history. But they are found mostly in historical books or records, poems, lyrics, miscellaneous writings on legends, anecdotes, or customs as well as novels concerning ghosts and spirituals. The phenomena of using and creating of unusual classifiers are mostly based on the motivation of ostentation of an author's erudition, elegance, orthodoxy, sophistication and virtuosity of using words, ingenuity, inventiveness as well as wisdom. Perhaps, these authors also want to impress their readers with uniqueness or humor to make their writings more fascinating and interesting through classifier use. Poems and lyrics are also abundant in such a kind of use, perhaps because creativeness of one's mind is as important as the expression of thoughts, feelings and wording. Historical books tend to show the quality of elegance and orthodoxy while books or novels concerning legends, customs and supernatural things tends to savor of humor and creativeness through this kind of classifier use. These unusual classifiers are generally not colloquial and mostly can only be found in the works of classical Chinese. They are neither prevalent, nor popular; rather, they are only sporadically found in certain books throughout the Chinese history.
