本文探討英、美國家學術國書館應用新科技發展虛擬參考服務之沿革、實施議題及趨勢。應用電子郵件、網路與影音科技，虛擬參考服務擴展了傳統圖書館因受限於人員及實體建築限制所提供之定點式參考服務，提供使用者隨時隨地、快速地諮詢服務。透過多館參考服務人員合作，英、美國家學術圖書館正努力朝向提供全天候(24/7)虛擬參考服務邁進，24/7意即每週七天、每天24小時的隨時即時網路參考服務。
The paper explores the current practice, issues, and trends in virtual reference services in academic libraries in England and U.S.A. Through the application of new technologies (including e-mail, web, and video conference systems), virtual reference services extend traditional stationed library reference services. Quite a few academic libraries are working on the 24/7 live web-based video conference reference services, which enables the librarian to provide real-time reference services with live voice and images, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
