本文旨在說明臺灣的閱讀狀況，作者由兩項閱讀調查的結果為切入點，佐以近五年臺灣圖書出版量、報紙和雜誌的訂閱率及公共圖書館的使用和借書率等數據；接著說明臺灣各界，包括政府及民間機構，推動的閱讀運動例如讀書會等。最後，作者提出幾點建構一個社會的閱讀文化之建議：由兒童時期培養閱讀習慣、尊重不同的閱讀品味、以民族誌研究法了解閱讀的分享意義與情況、閱讀環境的建置及提高讀物的可取得性。
The article intents to introduce the existing reading phenomenon in Taiwan based on two reading surveys, book publishing volume, subscribing rage of newspaper and maga-zine, the usage and lending rate of library collections. Besides, the methods of promoting reading movement by government and private institutes are elucidated. The author finally proposes some suggestions about society’s reading culture including cultivating reading habit, respecting different reading interests, working on reading research with ethnogra-phy method and elevating reading materials’accessibility.
