Background: Nursing research is very important for the training of nursing management. It is also the foundation of nursing services quality improvement. Among the nursing research topics, research on nursing administration is the key to the improvement of nursing profession and education. However, research on nursing administration is uncommon in our country. Moreover, the topics and methodologies of researches on nursing administration have rarely been explored.Purposes: The researchers reviewed all nursing administration papers published on VGH Nursing from 1984 to 2003 for analysis, and compared the differences of these articles published between the first and the second decade.Methods: The study method was to read all articles and then logged in the contents into the self-established 36 items code book. The results were analyzed by way of statistical software SPSS 15.0.Results: (1) the total amount of papers increased 1.5 times in the second decade, (2) most of the first authors were head nurses (36.36%), (3) most of the topic were: human recourse management (40.43%), followed by nursing quality (23.4%), followed by nursing education (12.8%), and patient classification (8.5%), (4) most research tool is using questionnaire (63.38%), and there were pilot studies in 22.34% papers, (5) inclusion of statistical analysis in the studies 51.28 % to 69.09 %,increasing 17.81%.Conclusions: The study results are helpful for nursing researchers to make clear the direction of future nursing administration research, and to promote the nursing quality for the increase of health status of our citizens.
