心理動力團體治療大致可分成將團體視為一個整體取向、內在精神取向和人際理論這三個層次，而且，將團體視為一個整體取向受到最多學者擁戴。近年的研究趨勢從證明心理動力團體治療的療效性、探究團體的個人內在和團體動力，已經走到理論整合與技術折衷的趨勢。
